I remember as a child growing up in Alabama, going to church on Sunday before a major election and being treated to speeches from major leaders in the Democratic party. I heard many of them,;Joseph Lowery of the SCLC, Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow Coalition, Andrew Young of the NAACP and last but not least, John F. Kennedy Jr. Even though I was a young black girl of the 80's, I knew that JFK, Jr was hot! It was such a thrill to be a member of a large black church where these pillars in the Democratic Party came to encourage us continue our fight for equality and justice. They reminded us of the struggles of our people and how the Democratic Party was our party, the party that would help us in our quest for victory. Some of them would even preach a little, get us stirred up, appeal to our emotionalism. I remember seeing church mothers in their Sunday best waving their fans as Jesse admonished them to keep hope alive. They certainly would. These women were solidly in the Democratic camp and I, even though I couldn't vote, was right there with them.
When I turned 18, away at college in Troy, Alabama and voting for the first time, I flirted with the idea of...dare I say it..voting Republican. Even now as I write this, I'm looking over my shoulder making sure there are none of my peers in the room with me, ready to criticize and accuse me of being an Aunt Thomasina. You see, growing up in Montgomery, Alabama as a black person, there was no question that you were a Democrat. There basically was no other choice. I mean, this was Montgomery; home of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott. We black people took pride in our history and as we should have. The people who marched, sat and sang, were brave. It took a lot of courage to break off the yoke of second class citizenship; knowing your place and staying in it. I'm proud to say that I'm from Montgomery.
With that said however, something when wrong after the marches were over and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. We lost focus of what we were fighting for. We were fighting for the right to be treated equally as human beings, as Americans. We were fighting for the right to have quality education, equal access to services that we as taxpayers paid for, equal protection and treatment by the judicial systems. We were fighting for the right to be considered equally for employment based on our qualifications and not be discounted because of our race. In essence, we were fighting for the right to be recognized as the citizens we were. What we were not fighting for was identification as a protected class. We were not fighting for the right to be given preferential treatment; to be considered for jobs for which we were not qualified simply based on our race. We were not fighting for the right to be placed in colleges based on our color rather than our academic merit. Our parents and grandparents did not fight for special consideration. They did not fight for the right to have our irresponsible and wrong choices excused or blamed on the lingering effects of slavery. They certainly did not fight for the right for our men to abandon their children, go on to make more children and provide for none of them.
So how do we get back to the principles of what we did fight for ? It's like this. Kick that no good Democrat out of your bed, honey. He is no good for you. He has nothing to give you that's worth anything. He is full of empty promises and no substance. All he can offer you is a little something to keep you dependent on him. He is not interested in you realizing who you are and what you can be without his help. In order for him to feel good about himself, he needs you to feel bad about yourself. He's verbally and mentally abusive. He puts you down. He tells you, you can't make it without him. He tells you that you can't overcome the mistakes of your past. He belittles you and your efforts when you step out and actually try to do something for yourself. When you accomplish something, he tells you it doesn't really mean much because you're black. He expects you to exist on the few handouts that he gives you and you have to face humiliation in order to get that!
Did you know that when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, more Republicans voted yes than Democrats? Read your history and find out. Did you know that it was the Republicans like Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner who pushed for civil rights for the freed black slaves in the south during Reconstruction? As black people become more informed and more conscious of their responsibility and ability for their future, they will get rid of that no good Democrat dog. If you didn't know, he's cheating on you with the illegal immigrants; offering them all the things that he'd promised to you. Now that you know he's not right for you, what will you do? Lie down and allow him to continue mistreating you, or kick his no good behind to the curb?
